Basically, an error message appears that there is a problem connecting to the IGC servers. Meanwhile, some of the unfortunate players may also get another error code 15006 along with error code 10002.
What Causes the Star Citizen Error 10002
After examining this particular problem, it turns out that there are several culprits that may be responsible for this error code. Here is a shortlist of instances where you may encounter this error:
Incorrect RSI entries: It turns out that one of the most common causes of this error code is when the RSI inputs used by the game are corrupt. If this scenario applies, you can solve the problem by removing the incorrect local RSI entries.
Excessive antivirus package protection: It turns out that you can expect this error if your antivirus is blocking the connection to the game server. In this case, you can solve the problem by disabling the antivirus firewall’s real-time protection or removing it from your system.
NAT Problem: If you have disabled UPnP in your router settings or your network device does not support it, you may see this error when you cannot connect to the game server. If this is the case, you can re-enable UPnP or manually redirect the TCP and UDP ports used.

How to fix the Star Citizen Error 10002
Temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus program
Your firewall and antivirus program may be preventing a connection between your Start Citizen installation and the game server, causing Star Citizen CIG Services error 10002.
It is true that firewall and antivirus software can protect your computer from the threat of viruses and other malicious attacks. However, sometimes they can show excessive protection and interfere with some of the normal functions of installed programs.
Therefore, if you use firewall and antivirus software, try temporarily disabling them when you start Star Citizen Launcher, including the built-in firewall and Windows Defender antivirus.
To disable the Windows Defender firewall :
- Press Windows + S, type Control Panel, and then click on the result to open it.
- Go to System and Security -> Windows Defender Firewall and click Enable or Disable
- Windows Defender Firewall in the left pane.
- Select Disable Windows Defender firewall for private and public networks.
To disable Windows Defender antivirus :
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Update and Security -> Windows Security and in the right pane, click Virus and Threat Protection.
- Under Virus and Threat Protection Settings, click Manage Settings.
- Under Real-time protection, remove the button to disable it.
Run the launcher as an administrator
If the game does not have administrator privileges, some of its usual requirements will be limited, which may cause some problems when opening or using the game. So, if you get Star Citizen error 10002, try running the game’s launcher as administrator.
- Simply right-click on the launcher and select Run as administrator.
- If you still want to open it as an administrator in the future, you can right-click on the launcher and select Properties.
- On the Compatibility tab, check the Run this program as administrator checkbox and click Apply/OK to save your changes.
Removing Incorrect RSI Entries
It has been proven that incorrect entries in the RSI server can also cause CIG services to fail to connect. To get rid of this problem, you can try deleting incorrect RSI records by following these steps.
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Navigate to C: WindowsSystem32driversetc, which is the default location where your Windows installation contains the RSI server entries.
- Switch to the View tab and enable the filename extension.
- Right-click on the hosts’ file and select Rename. Add .old to the end of the file name and press Enter to save the changes.
- This will cause Windows to ignore the file and create a new file with no incorrect entries.
- After that, you can try to start Star Citizen again to see if error code 10002 is fixed.
Using a new launcher
In some cases, the installed launcher may not automatically update to the latest version for some reason. If you see “PTU” somewhere on the launcher screen, you are probably using an old launcher. At this point, you need to completely remove the old launcher and upgrade to the new one.
Here’s how to do it:
- Press Windows + R to bring up the Run window, type %appdata%, and click OK.
- In the Roaming folder, delete the rsilauncher folder.
- In the Run dialog box, type %localappdata% and click OK.
- In the Local folder, delete the StarCitizen folder.
- Go to the installation path of the game and delete the entire “Roberts Space Industries” folder.
- Download the new launcher from the official website and install it properly.
