Fix OneDrive Automatically Deleting Files from Folder

OneDrive can still delete your files if the system hard drive has bad sectors or crashes. In addition, the error under discussion may be caused by outdated Windows and OneDrive clients.

Users are made aware of the problem when they receive a message about files being deleted from OneDrive or when they open OneDrive and find that their files are missing. The problem is reported on Windows PC and Mac systems. Both personal and work/Office 365 versions of OneDrive are reportedly affected.

While there are some instances for individual folders, severe impacts have been reported for shared folders. A user reported severe damage when there were folders in the OneDrive client, but the files in the folders disappeared. In addition, the problem was also reported by users who may have fixed it before.

After a while, OneDrive will start deleting files automatically. This option for deleting locally available cloud content can be found under Settings > System > Storage. Under Storage Sense, the user should select Change how the storage space is automatically released.

Then under OneDrive in the content drop-down list, select online only if not open for longer than. Select the number of days.

Note that this does not permanently delete the entire file. If files have not been used for a certain period of time, this content will only be downloaded if it is not opened for more than a certain period of time. The file is always available in the cloud and can be viewed by the user at any time. However, if necessary, Internet access is required to access the file.

Microsoft is now focusing on moving all Windows features and settings to the Settings application. You are moving all the settings and options from the Win32 interface to UWP. In addition, we can now delete temporary files by clicking the “Clear Now” button on the same page.
